Attractions & recreation

- 1.50 kilometer(s) from Hjuldamperen Hjejlen, The world's oldest coal-fired paddle steamer. The Hjejlen is the world's oldest coal-fired paddle steamer in operation. It has been sailing on the Silkeborg Lakes since 1861, and you can still hear the deep roar and the rhythmic splash of the paddle wheels against the clear water of the Gudena River as the "old lady" of the entire Søhøjland region leaves the quay. When you step aboard the Hjejlen, you'll see how the boilermaker throws coal under the boiler and the engineer lubricates the old machine - just as it has been done for more than 150 years
- 1.10 kilometer(s) from Silkeborg Castle, Silkeborg's oldest history is linked to Silkeborg Castle, which was located on Slotsholmen, northeast of Silkeborg's current city center, at the mouth of the Gudenå River in Silkeborg Langsø. The first Silkeborg Castle was built in 1385. It was a primitive wooden building with pallisades around it. It was later replaced by a stone house and later again, in the early 1500s, by a stone main building, a castle courtyard and a stable courtyard. Silkeborg Castle received several royal visits. Both Frederik II and Christian IV regularly stayed overnight in the main building "Det Store Stenhus", including during hunting trips in Central Jutland. The castle was heavily damaged during the Swedish wars in the 1600s, when Silkeborg was occupied three times by Swedish troops who vandalized the castle buildings. The last remnant of the castle was demolished in 1726 after being in a state of decay for a number of years
