THE FLORENCE OF THE NORTH was what Schwerin was once called. On a small island in the middle of Lake Schwerin stands a fairy-tale castle, whose golden roofs, towers and pinnacles sparkle in the sun. Schwerin is surrounded by the beauty of its lakes, whose shores extend right into the centre of town. The town centre offers a lot of interesting sights in a compact area. The towering cathedral is a typical example of the Northern German brick Gothic style. Schelf Church and Schelfmarkt square are uniquely baroque. The ALTER GARTEN is one of the most beautiful squares in all of Germany.
